You may have wondered what the difference between the terms ‘Farsi’ and ‘Persian’ is. Both can be seen in the same place or at two separate entries on the list of languages covered by a translation agency.
Actually both can mean a language spoken by the people of Iran, Afghanistan, Tajikistan and a few other countries.
Locally people of these countries refer to their native language as ‘Farsi’. The proper English word for it, however, is ‘Persian’ albeit more and more people of other nationalities are associating the term ‘Farsi’ and ‘Persian’ with the same language.
‘Persia’ is the old ancient name for Iran. Therefore, ‘Persian’ can also be used in a slightly difference context. It can refer to Iranian culture, literature, history, etc.
Tip: If you ask someone where they are from, and they tell you they are Persian, it means they come from Iran.
